Residents move into new housing development at St Stephen, Cornwall
An affordable housing development in St Stephen has been completed and residents are ready to move in. Homes for the South West member LiveWest joined forces with St Austell-based contractor Gilbert & Goode to build the 24-home development.
The 100% affordable scheme has seven homes for shared ownership and 17 for rent, including a mix of one-bedroom flats and two and three-bedroom houses.
The development comes more than nine years after LiveWest completed phase one of the site.
The development was supported with grant funding of £960,000 from Cornwall Council.
It is one of a number of projects supported by the council as part of a wider affordable housing funding programme which has delivered 167 new homes across Cornwall.
Robert Cock, Head of Delivery at LiveWest, said: “This was our first scheme with the local builder Gilbert and Goode and they were excellent to work with.
“The site team had a great attitude and were always keen to help wherever they could.
“It has been 9 years since our previous affordable scheme in St Stephen and this has been extremely popular with the two-bedroom rented homes alone attracting 114 bids.
“The scheme demonstrates our continued commitment to provide affordable housing for local people in areas of high need.”
Pete Sadler, Managing Director for Gilbert & Goode, said: “I am extremely proud of what the team has achieved at this scheme.
“They are an attractive collection of properties which provide much-needed family homes for people in the St Stephen area. I hope the new residents will be very happy in their new homes.
“As a Cornish developer, we enjoy collaborating with businesses which share our vision to create aspirational environments and communities.
“It was fantastic to work with LiveWest on this development, and we look forward to working with them again on the next scheme.”
Andrew Mitchell, Cornwall Council cabinet portfolio holder for homes, said: “Delivering good quality homes for local people is a priority for Cornwall Council. We’ve provided around £3.2 million of funding to help LiveWest deliver 167 one hundred per cent affordable homes for local people over three years.
This new development in St Stephen will provide a great mix of homes and a place to live for 24 local households, either through shared ownership or for rent via the Cornwall Homechoice register.”
